The EOS 1D X Mark II is a worthy successor to Canon’s 1D series of professional cameras. It gains an improved AF system with greater coverage, significantly improved dynamic range, and a virtually limitless Raw buffer when shooting with CFast cards. Additionally, the camera now includes top notch 4K video with beautiful color straight out of the camera. When combined with Canon’s class leading dual-pixel AF system for video, it’s easy to get great video without being an expert. This is a camera that sports, action, and event photographers will love.

Sure, it’s big, it’s heavy, and it’s expensive, but the Canon 1DX Mark II is the best Canon DSLR for sports, action, wildlife, or photojournalism. The 20MP resolution is a slight increase from the earlier 1DX, but it might not suit those commercial photographers who need mountains of megapixels. However, for everything else, the Canon 1DX Mark II’s images are right on the money. Images look great, and dynamic range is excellent. High ISO performance is also top-notch, and the versatile autofocus and incredible burst shooting performance will not disappoint or slow you down.

The EOS 1Dx Mark II is Canon’s new flagship DSLR, aimed at the demands of professional sports and wildlife photographers, and photo journalists. It features a new 20.2 Megapixel full-frame sensor, shoots up to 170 RAW frames at 14fps with AF, employs a 61-point AF system and can film Cinema 4k video at up to 60p or 1080 at up to 120p.

Canon has fine-tuned proven handling and controls in response to user feedback, and delivered a big gain in continuous shooting performance. It also pushes the Nikon D5 all the way for image quality within its standard sensitivity setting. We can expect to see quite a few 1D X IIs at the Olympic games this summer.

Overall, despite the odd complaint here and there, the Canon EOS 1D X Mark II is a superb camera which performs extremely well in a variety of different tough conditions that professional photographers will deal with on a daily basis. It’s worthy of an upgrade for many, but others may be able to hold on until the asking price drops a little.

Thanks to its sensor and processor technology developments, Canon has managed to pull-off a modest increase in pixel count at the same time as a slight improvement in image quality in comparison with the 1DX. Unlike Nikon, the company has also steered clear of largely useless, but headline grabbing sensitivity settings, while delivering a good working range and excellent low-light capability.
